About immedi.at
immedi.at is a project I started about a year or so ago to cut my teeth on Ruby and Ruby On Rails. Previously I’d been writing entirely in Java, but had grown weary of how cumbersome, verbose and time-consuming development had become. This project was my chance to migrate to a better solution.
immedi.at is a simple tool that monitors RSS feeds and transmits any changes to your instant messenger. I developed it because I wanted to be able to respond quickly to developing news and blog stories. The tool changes the entire dynamic of RSS feeds by making them come to you, instead of you having to constantly check to see what has changed.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the tool quickly became popular with a wide range of folks. People used it to track comments on blogs, respond rapidly to ebay auctions, or to keep tabs on custom news feed related to their businesses. The technology was even licensed by a California political campaign.
